When was the last time you cleaned your mattress? If you can barely remember, we recommend you think about it. Every night, which means you spend most of the day on your mattress. Dust, sweat, dead skin cells and oil from your skin accumulate on your sleeping surface. This creates a breeding ground for bacteria and dust mites. Even if you are not allergic, your mattress must be cleaned regularly. Here are 3 simple ways to clean any mattress or mattress pad effectively and quickly.

It is recommended to clean your mattress at least every few months. More often if you have allergies. You can be sure that your mattress will be fresh, clean and free of unpleasant odours or unwanted stains.

The three-step rule

The easiest way to clean your mattress is to vacuum it. It is still common practice to shake off the dust by banging the mattress. This method is most often used in homes with light and small mattresses. However, this method of cleaning is not only ineffective but can also be dangerous, causing allergic reactions in those who inhale dust mites along with the dust. The dust is not removed, but is merely lifted into the air, causing it to return later. With the vacuum cleaner and the furniture cleaning nozzle, you can easily and quickly remove dust from the sides and top of your mattress or mattress pad. Press the nozzle firmly against the base of the bed while vacuuming to remove dust from under the mattress fabric. Use the narrow nozzle to vacuum along the seams.

The next step in mattress care is steam cleaning. A steam iron or the steam function on a regular iron will do the job. Steam cleaning devices can be great for disinfecting and removing bacteria from various surfaces. Simply run the tip of the iron along the fabric, but make sure that no water drips onto the mattress (too much moisture can build up on soft furnishings). This will effectively eradicate dust mites close to the surface. After steam cleaning the mattress, it is recommended to vacuum the mattress again.

If your mattress is a pet or if you often snack on your bed, your mattress is likely to be stained. The easiest and quickest way to remove stains is with an upholstery cleaner. These cleaners are specially formulated to remove a wide range of stains, including urine, vomit and food stains. They contain enzymes that also destroy odours. Spray the cleaner on the stain or on a cloth and remember to clean the stain from the outer edges of the stain to the centre to prevent the stain from spreading. Try not to get the mattress too wet. After cleaning the stain, remember to wipe the area with a cloth dampened with clean water to remove any residual cleaner and dry the area.

How do I fight yellow stains?

The lifetime of a mattress can affect its colour, but so can sweat, skin oils, urine or other liquids we come into contact with every day. To fade stains without getting the whole mattress too wet, you can make a simple cleaner. You will need half a glass each of hydrogen peroxide and warm water and a quarter of a glass of mild dishwashing liquid. Pour this liquid into a spray bottle and lightly spray the stains on the mattress. Clean with a soft brush or a terry cloth towel. After half an hour, spray the stains with clean water and dry thoroughly so that no cleaning agent remains. Remember to allow the fabric to dry, as moisture is a breeding ground for bacteria and dust mites on a mattress or mattress pad.

An alternative to this manual cleaning method is a steam cleaner, which sprays a cleaning agent and cleans the stains immediately. Not only does it remove stains better, but it also pulls the stain out of the mattress faster, so your sleeping surface will dry faster after the cleaning procedure.

What if you need a mattress with non-standard dimensions?

Sometimes you just want a unique product that reflects your individual style, and sometimes a custom mattress is a necessity for specific needs. For example, if you are taller than the standard mattress dimensions, a regular mattress may be uncomfortable because the length will be too short.
